Humpback whales are one of the ocean’s most iconic and captivating creatures in the world. Known for their acrobatic displays and hauntingly melodic songs, these whales are also symbols of resilience and hope. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF HUMBPACK WHALES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The humpback whale, named for the distinctive hump on its back, can grow up to 60 feet (~18 meters) long and weigh 80,000 pounds (~36,000 kilograms). Though enormous, they are not a predatory species, instead they filter feed for tiny krill or small pelagic fishes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a favorite to whale-watchers, humpbacks are known for their iconic breaches during feeding season, but they\u2019re also known for their singing! During mating season, males will compose intricate songs that can be heard over long distances to attract females.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Known for their incredible journeys between breeding and feeding grounds, humpback whales have some of the longest migrations in the animal kingdom!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During feeding season, they make their way to colder regions like the Arctic or Antarctic, where we can bear witness to their feeding rituals as they breach. These whales can sometimes be observed grouping together to coordinate feeding through a technique called \u201cbubble-netting\u201d where they herd schools of fish together, trapping them in a \u201cnet\u201d of bubbles. They then swim upward with their mouths open wide to feed on the fish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

THREATS AND CONSERVATION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Modern (and pre-modern) commercial whaling dangerously depleted humpback populations, though the species has shown remarkable resilience. Since 1966, humpback whales have been legally protected worldwide from commercial whaling and many populations have rebounded as a result.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, they still face threats. Collisions with boats, noise pollution, and oil and gas drilling all put these whales at risk. They are also particularly vulnerable to becoming entangled \u2013 often fatally \u2013 in fishing gear.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the United States, Oceana campaigns off the west coast to protect humpback whales as well as several other species from the dangers of bycatch.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
