With their colossal size, unique physical characteristics, and serene demeanor, these majestic creatures captivate the hearts of marine enthusiasts and casual observers alike.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-brief-introduction\">A Brief Introduction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whale sharks are not whales, instead they belong to the shark family. <em>But they aren\u2019t like other sharks either! <\/em>Growing up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu\/discover-fish\/species-profiles\/rhincodon-typus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">65 feet long<\/a> (that\u2019s longer than a school bus), these sharks are renowned for their enormous size, distinctive flat heads, and wide mouths.<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But these gentle giants pose no threat to humans as they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu\/discover-fish\/species-profiles\/rhincodon-typus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">filter-feeders<\/a>, feeding primarily on plankton, small fish, and other tiny organisms. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While their most striking feature is their size, whale sharks have an appearance that is equally captivating. White spots dot their back \u2013 the pattern of which is <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/j.1365-2664.2005.01117.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unique <\/a>to each shark, like a fingerprint! \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-6186d467 gb-headline-text\">Habitat and Distribution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whale sharks are found in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/19488\/2365291#assessment-information\"> tropical and warm-temperate oceans worldwide<\/a>, often in coastal areas but also in the open ocean. They spend most of their time in the epipelagic zone (or sunlight zone), but also have been known to dive to at least 1,928 meters (about 1.2 miles) in depth!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most sightings of these sharks occur at a small number of known coastal feeding grounds, where they aggregate at the surface to feed on seasonal specialties.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-eb77fd15 gb-headline-text\">Conservation and Threats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, these incredible animals are at risk, listed as endangered by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/19488\/2365291#assessment-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)<\/a>. They face a variety of threats such as habitat destruction, climate change, and most notably, human activity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whale sharks have been known to be fished by small-scale and large-scale fisheries around the world. While some fishers specifically target the species, others catch them incidentally, called \u201cbycatch.\u201d They also are at risk of boat strikes. In areas where shipping lanes exist close to feeding grounds, propeller injuries are commonly recorded during monitoring programs. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conservation efforts are crucial to protect these gentle giants.
